How To Humanize AI Content

TABLE OF CONTENTS

AI-generated content is everywhere. It’s faster, cheaper, and scalable.

But there’s one glaring problem: it often lacks the human touch. You’re not alone if you’ve ever read an AI-written article and felt like something was off—too perfect, too structured, too predictable.

I’ve seen content evolve dramatically over the last decade.

When I first got into the SEO game, the skyscraper technique was all the rage in SEO. This technique called for finding the #1 ranking article for a given keyword, then just writing a better and often longer article.

For the most part, this technique worked until Google caught on. The SERPs smartened up as Google realized that word count may not be the end all be all.

In 2025, AI content is filling the internet, leapfrogging us closer to the “Dead Internet Theory.”

The #1 problem with AI content is that nobody wants to read AI content. Search engines know that, so they try to suss out AI-driven content.

To figure out how to humanize AI content, we first have to figure out.

Why is AI content generally so bad?

1. Lack Of Information Gain

One of AI’s biggest limitations is its inability to generate novel or new information. If the #1 problem with AI content is that nobody wants to read it. The #1 reason nobody wants to read AI-generated content is because it doesn’t add anything new.

AI models are more information gatherers instead of independent thinkers. This has tremendous value in data aggregation, pattern recognition, and automating repetitive tasks, but it falls short in generating original insights, critical thinking, and creativity.

So, how do you avoid this with your AI content?

You need a way to feed your LLM new or relevant information about a topic. We use a series of prompts, automation, and research workflows to dive deep into topics. We then parse this information for unique insights and validate them for truth and audience fit.

2. AI Content Is Robotic

AI content follows predictable patterns. Here’s what typically gives AI-generated content away:

  • Overuse of synonyms (e.g., constantly swapping “great” for “excellent” or “outstanding”)
  • Formulaic sentence structure that lacks variation
  • Lack of real-world experiences or anecdotes
  • Fails to capture nuances of human emotion
  • Struggles with humor, sarcasm, and cultural references

Google is prioritizing helpful, people-first content. If you want your content to rank, you need to make AI work for you—not the other way around.

To humanize your AI content, you need prompts that instruct your LLM on what NOT to do and, more importantly, what TO do.

Writing Tactics to Make AI Content Feel More Human

1. Use Unexpected Analogies and Metaphors

People love comparisons that make complex ideas easier to understand. AI tends to generate bland, safe analogies. Instead, think outside the box:

  • Instead of saying “AI content lacks depth,” say “AI writing is like a robot making small talk—it sounds right, but something feels off.”
  • Instead of “Use engaging content,” say “Write like you’re explaining something to your best friend over coffee.”

2. Break Sentence Patterns

AI tends to create repetitive sentence structures. Break them up with:

  • Short, punchy statements. Like this one.
  • Sentence fragments for emphasis. Really.
  • Intentional pauses… to create suspense.

When writing, imagine you’re telling a story instead of delivering a lecture.

3. Inject Real Stories and Personal Experiences

One of the easiest ways to humanize AI content? Use real examples.

Instead of:

“Good SEO is about using the right keywords.”

Try:

“I once worked with a client who stuffed their content with keywords. They ranked—for a week. Then Google caught on, and their traffic plummeted. SEO is about balance, not stuffing keywords mindlessly.”

People relate to stories, not generic advice.

4. Add Humor and Imperfections

AI writes in a “perfect” way, but perfection isn’t human. Mistakes, quirks, and personality make writing feel real.

Try:

“AI-generated content is like that one guy at a party who knows everything but has zero social skills. Yeah, we don’t want that.”

Make your readers chuckle—it builds connection.

5. Use Conversational Formatting

Most AI-generated content is too structured. Loosen it up:

  • Ask questions (Is this making sense?)
  • Use contractions (you’ll instead of you will)
  • Use bucket brigades (Here’s the kicker… or Now, imagine this…)

This mimics real conversation.

6. Avoid Over-Explaining

AI tends to over-explain simple concepts. If something is common knowledge, skip the fluff and get to the point.

Instead of:

“SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is the process of optimizing a website so that search engines rank it higher in search results.”

Say:

“SEO = making Google love your content.”

7. Avoid These AI-Tell Phrases/Words

You can do that by giving your LLM this prompt.

Before outputting the content, review it for the following words and rewrite those sentences with appropriate alternatives:

meticulous, meticulously, navigating, complexities, realm, bespoke, tailored, towards, underpins, everchanging, ever-evolving, the world of, not only, seeking more than just, designed to enhance, it’s not merely, our suite, it is advisable, daunting, in the heart of, when it comes to, in the realm of, amongst unlock the secrets, unveil the secrets, robust, delve, notwithstanding, dynamic, synergistic, in conclusion, in summary, nuanced, tapestry, let’s explore, unique, ensure, utmost.

That Sounds A Lot Like… Just Writing Content Myself

Ok, now hold up.

These AI humanization techniques sound like a roundabout way of writing content yourself. Yes! I was hoping you would eventually land on that point.

How is AI supposed to interject real-world stories about a topic it doesn’t know about?

Look at it this way.

  • Writing content yourself is like taking Amtrak from San Diego to New York City.
  • Using AI to write your content is like flying from San Diego to Chicago and taking Amtrak the rest of the way there.

You arrive by train, but just a lot faster.

The only way to write AI content that sounds humanized is to train your LLM on the front end and then edit its outputs on the back end.
